My name is Rachel Zant. I originally started Pen with a Purpose in 2007 to provide copywriting services to nonprofit organizations. However I recently decided to broaden my scope. I now help businesses, nonprofits and individuals connect to and communicate their unique stories… clearly and compellingly.
How it all began
I moved to Vancouver in August of 2001 to start a new job at a respected direct response fundraising agency. Newly graduated with a degree in English (Honours) I was ready to start a career using my passion and talent for writing. Over the next six years I was a sponge, soaking up all I could learn about fundraising, copywriting and direct response marketing. I quickly advanced from an executive assistant typing out dictated fundraising letters to an account director responsible for multi-million dollar fundraising campaigns.
Now, I’ve been writing ever since I was about 8 years old. I’ve got a university degree specializing in writing. And yet, the rules I learned in those six years at a direct response agency would transform my life.
Be careful what you wish for!
When I left the agency in 2007, I was looking for a change. I had dreams of traveling the world on a grand, exciting adventure. While I investigated options for what I might do, I learned that life had a different plan for me… I was pregnant.
As a new mother, my life turned upside down. My own story, about who I was as a woman, a mother, a ‘wife’, was a confused, jumbled mess. Unresolved issues from my past kept rearing their ugly heads. After many years of self-development and self-exploration, I realized the same rules of successful direct response copywriting apply to success and happiness in your personal life as well.
I found that using my pen, I had the power to examine, (re)write and transform my own story. In my work as a copywriter, I discovered I had an innate talent for helping my clients define their purpose. Through interviews over the phone or face-to-face, I was able to draw out their unique story and communicate it in words they couldn’t find on their own.
